Philodendron Xanadu Plant Guide: How to Grow and Care for this plant + 5 Decoration ideas!

Philodendron Xanadu

Add a breath of fresh air to your home with the classic Brazilian Philodendron Xanadu. Philodendron originates from two Greek words i.e.: “Philo ” meaning love or affection, and “dendron” meaning tree. Philodendron Xanadu is also called cut-leaf philodendron and is commonly known as Philodendron “Winterbourn”. Based on new DNA evidence, it has been recently classified as Thaumatophyllum xanadu (Source: NCBI).

With sparkly, tough green leaves, it makes a decent plant for both indoor and outdoor spaces. The philodendron grows in a heaped shape on a dense wooden twig, and each leaf has distinct lobes. The leaves of Philodendron Xanadu can grow up to 18 inches long and 12 inches wide, while the plant itself will usually grow from 2 to 4 feet tall. In some cases, the plant can grow as high as 6 to 10 feet tall. As the philodendron grows day by day, it becomes wider than its height.

The best thing about Philodendron Xanadu is that it is super versatile – easily planted either indoors or outdoors. It will grow in any area of your home without needing much effort. However, this plant will not survive outdoors in very harsh cold seasons as the leaves start to burn. Yet, nothing to worry about, as it will recover once the season shifts.

As philodendron Xanadu will bloom and thrive anywhere well if not over-watered, it is widely used in multiple spaces like educational institutes, fast-food restaurants, and malls. The fun thing is that if we grow this plant in the sun, its leaves will be more attractive, and it will have a deep projection, adding lots of greenery and freshness to any area!

How to Take Care of The Philodendron Xanadu?

Although Philodendron Xanadu is a low-maintenance plant, it is still a living thing, and like all living creatures, it too requires love and attention to grow. Here are some essential factors which you should carefully examine for the plant to bloom and live long.

For healthy growth, the Philodendron Xanadu requires indirect bright sunlight; this means that you can put it somewhere with partial shade. It can also grow in lower light, but the colors of the leaves will turn darker. On the other hand, too much light or direct sunlight will burn the leaves. Here is a complete guide on How Much Light Does Your Plant Needs?

This plant needs regular watering but make sure that the top of the soil is dry before you water it again. Water the plant until the water flows down to the saucer, but make sure you empty the saucer afterward to avoid root rot. In winter, water is enough until the soil is barely moist.

When the plant is young, it will need fertilizer once every two weeks. Once it matures, it will only need water-soluble fertilizer once a month in Spring and Fall. In summers, as the plant is rapidly growing, feed the fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.

Philodendron thrives in warm temperatures. The temperature for its healthy growth in summers should be 65-80°F, and in winters should be maintained at around 60°F.

Philodendron Xanadu grows well in moderate humidity levels, but high humidity induces lush green foliage. So, if you live in a dry environment, mist your plant regularly. Here is complete detail on What is High Humidity and How to Increase Humidity for Your Houseplants

Fresh, rich soil which doesn’t hold on to water is super good for the plant. If you want it to grow bigger, don’t forget to put it in a large pot and ensure the soil remains soggy.

This plant naturally grows in a loose clump of leaves and does not require pruning. You will only need to groom it once every 1-2 months by removing old leaves that turn yellow as they die.

Common Plant Diseases of Philodendron Xanadu

Pests and Fungi

When it comes to certain pests and fungi, this plant can be a bit sensitive and becomes susceptible to leaf spots, Erwiana Blight, etc.
